Bio

Tendai Biti is a visiting fellow at the Center for Global Development. While at CGD, he will be working on issues around fragile states, debt management, re-engagement with the international financial institutions, and economic recovery. Mr. Biti served as the Minister of Finance of Zimbabwe from 2009 to 2013, a period which saw him turn around  an economy that had been ravaged by hyper-inflation of 500 billion % and an unemployment rate up to 85%. He is also the Secretary-General and a founding member of the Movement for Democratic Change and a Member of Parliament for Harare East in Zimbabwe.  Mr. Biti rose to prominence after handling high profile constitutional and labor cases, including a landmark case that saw the notorious Law and Order Maintenance Act, which did not allow demonstrations without police clearance, being repealed.

Rebuilding Zimbabwe: Lessons from a Coalition Government, Tendai Biti, 2015.
