Dr. Congo’s research focuses on development finance, micro and rural finance, agriculture and rural development, and social economy in developing countries, especially Africa.
Youssoufou was a IDRC Visiting Fellow from October 2011 - October 2012. Dr. Congo’s research focused on development finance, micro and rural finance, agriculture and rural development, and social economy in developing countries, especially Africa. He is the author or co-author of four books and more than twenty journal articles, book chapters, and professional presentations on micro and rural finance, agriculture and rural development, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and social economy in Africa.
Dr. Congo has served as a visiting professor at the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics of the Protestant University of Congo, and as founder and director of the Microfinance Research Center since 2003. Before working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Dr. Congo served as a researcher for eight years at the Center for Social Economy of the University of Liege (Belgium) and as microfinance expert for two years at Appui au Development Autonome, a Luxembourg-based microfinance NGO. At Appui au Development Autonome, he led the creation of the Center for Microfinance Research in Luxembourg. Dr. Congo also served as an economist for a Burkina Faso rural microcredit project while lecturing at the Faculty of Economics and Management of the University of Ouagadougou from 1991 to 1993. Dr. Congo received a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Liege (Belgium), a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the National University of Cote d’Ivoire, and an M.A. in Economics from the University of Dakar (Senegal).
Dr. Congo has also served as a visiting fellow at the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (2010), the African Studies Center of Leiden University (2003), the Center for Civil Society Studies of the Johns Hopkins University (2002), and the World Institute for Development Economics Research of the United Nations University (2001).
