Events Manager – Temporary


The Center for Global Development (CGD) seeks a confident, energetic, and detail-oriented events manager to join its communications and policy outreach team on a temporary basis for approximately seven months from January to July, 2018. CGD is an independent, non-profit research organization based in Washington, D.C., that works to improve the lives of the global poor through innovative economic research that drives better policy and practice by the world’s most powerful decision makers.  Events are a central and growing component of our creative communications output and CGD has a reputation for putting on engaging, varied and substantive events, with high profile development policy makers and leading researchers. On average we host more than 130 events a year, from high-level private roundtables and workshops, to conferences, panel discussions, debates, book launches and other large public events in our on-site conference center. The events manager is responsible for planning and executing these, as well as some events off-site. The events manager reports directly to the vice president of communications and policy outreach, and works closely with the communications and policy outreach team, the institutional advancement team, and the Center’s researchers.


  • Event planning: Helps identify event opportunities; collaborates with researchers and communications team to determine best scope, format, and audience to maximize outreach goals.
  • Event planning: Helps research and engage appropriate event speakers and/or participants.
  • Event preparation: Helps draft and edit all event invitations, utilizes Salesforce to compile invitation lists, and CVent to send out invitations.
  • Event preparation: Creates and updates event-related web pages, registration pages and follow-up communications; tracks and reports invite responses.
  • Event execution: Manages logistics for all CGD events, including liaising with the IT department on audiovisual needs, arranging for catering and outside equipment, and occasionally finding external venues. Administers contracts and invoices. Coordinates with publications manager for printed materials and media relations on journalist access. Makes travel and hotel arrangements, as needed.
  • Event follow-up: Reports event attendance internally, develops and cultivates CGD’s relationships with external audiences; updates events photo database.
  • Additional: Contribute to CGD communications team weekly and long-term planning; recruit and oversee communications intern (shared with media relations).
  • Works closely with institutional advancement team to involve stakeholders in the Center’s events.


  • Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree
  • Three to five years’ event management experience.
  • Proven ability to conceptualize, plan and execute events of varying size, scope, objective and topic.
  • Proven ability to successfully manage multiple and changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written, verbal and people skills
  • Grace-under-pressure, good judgment, and professional presence.
  • Self-starter with extraordinary attention to detail, strong work ethic and sense of humor.
  • A passion for excellence and a desire to contribute to the institution’s positive reputation.
  • Familiarity with and demonstrated interest in global development. A good understanding of the global development community, CGD audience and stakeholders,
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with contact databases, email marketing and event management software.
  • HTML skills a plus.

This position is on a temporary, contract basis for seven months (January through July 2018), requiring full-time availability with flexible scheduling to allow for early morning, late afternoon and occasionally evening events.
