Policy Analyst – Development, Technology, and Globalization


The Center for Global Development, an independent, non-partisan research organization in Washington, DC seeks a full-time Policy Analyst to support the work of two Senior Fellows. The successful candidate will have experience with complex research in economics, public policy, political science or a related field. The candidate must demonstrate outstanding analytic skills, both in academic research and applied policy analysis as well as organizational skills.

The successful candidate will perform a range of project research, economic analysis, and other duties.  Potential areas of focus include applications of digital technology including to subsidy reform, results-based aid and development finance, productivity and economic growth, globalization, and inequality. Potential regional focus areas include Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America among others.   Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conduct literature and data searches for ongoing research projects.
  • Conduct statistical analyses and econometric modeling; prepare publication-quality tables and graphs to convey those results.
  • Attend and organize meetings and conferences related to research priorities.
  • Provide other research, writing, and editing support for various reports and documents. Collaborate with senior staff and members of the CGD communications team to draft blogs, policy briefs, notes and report periodic findings.
  • Monitor deliverables and project execution.
  • Perform other duties as necessary in support of senior research staff.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and skills:

  • Master’s degree in economics, international development, or a related field; and 1-2 years of applied research experience in international development or a related field. Excellent candidates with a bachelor’s degree in economics and 3+ years applied research experience will also be considered.
  • Training in econometrics, microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, development economics.
  • Outstanding attention to detail; proven ability to advance research projects with hands-off supervision while being accountable for the accuracy of outputs.
  • Essential software skills: Proficiency in Stata (or other software tools such as R) for descriptive and econometric analysis of cross-section and panel data. Proficiency in MS Excel to construct spreadsheet models and generate publication-quality graphics. Experience in the analysis of household- and firm-level data would be an asset.
  • Strong communications and writing skills in English.
  • Confidence, flexibility, can-do attitude, and intellectual curiosity in a demanding and fast-paced environment.
  • Good humor and collegiality are essential.
