As more countries rise out of poverty, CGD is focusing on the inequities and emerging problems that jeopardize global health progress: How should governments allocate scarce health budgets rationally and equitably? How can the world advance global health security and fight infectious diseases? What can be done to address treatment inequalities between developed and developing countries? What are the benefits of, mechanisms for, and threats to, greater family planning provision? CGD research helps policymakers build sustainable health systems, respond to shifting realities, and deliver value for money.
The Sustainable Development Goals are an ambitious set of targets for global development progress by 2030 that were agreed by the United Nations in 2015. A review of the literature on meeting "zero targets" suggests very high costs compared to available resources, but also that in many cases there remains a considerable gap between financing known technical solutions and achieving the outcomes called for in the SDGs. In some cases, we (even) lack the technical solutions required to achieve the zero targets, suggesting the need for research and development of new approaches.
This post previews preliminary answers to one initial question: what can we say about the size and nature of health commodity markets in low- and middle-income countries? We share early insights; list the data sources we used, while also signalling others we hope to draw on going forward; and highlight our assumptions and caveats.
Please join CGD for a conversation with four former directors of USAID’s Office of Population and Reproductive Health. These four leaders served between 1986 and 2013—and their tenures have spanned US administrations from Ronald Reagan to Barack Obama. Since the Office’s inception in 1969, the US government has played a substantial role in supporting expanded access to voluntary family planning around the world through technical assistance, diplomatic and policy engagement, and financial support. But differences in policy across administrations have meant that US leadership in international family planning has often faced periods of uncertainty. CGD is convening this panel to revisit historic experiences and to shed light on lessons learned that may be used to inform stakeholders in the current landscape.

We took a stab at piecing together publicly available data sources to find an initial answer for low- and middle-income countries as part of the background work to inform the CGD Working Group on the Future of Global Health Procurement.

Half a decade after the landmark UN endorsement, more countries than ever are working to translate UHC goals into reality through defined, tangible, equitable, and comprehensive health services for their populations. On December 7, 2017, Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, Government of Canada, gave a keynote address at the the third annual Birdsall House Conference on Women, "Reproductive Choices to Life Chances: The Links between Contraception and Women’s Economic Empowerment."
Although family planning programs can improve women’s welfare directly through changes in realized fertility, they may also have important incentive effects by increasing parents’ investments in girls not yet fertile. We study these potential incentive effects, finding that family planning may have raised raise girls’ educational attainment substantially. We also find that these early investments are linked to gains in women’s paid labor at prime working ages and to greater support for women’s elderly parents (a marker for women’s bargaining power within the household). Notably, these incentive effects may be larger than the direct effects of family planning alone.
