Ideas to Action:

Independent research for global prosperity

Research and Development

Research and development (R&D) to address global health challenges is a global public good with the potential to drive rapid improvements in global welfare. CGD examines how to best prioritize, fund, and incentivize R&D where status quo private sector investments are too small or too slow. For example, tuberculosis is one of few diseases which has high prevalence in both middle- and low- income countries, but not high-income countries—and it has thus failed to attract sufficient private sector R&D investments. CGD's work aims to structure a value-based market commitment for a new universal TB regimen which will have MICs in the driver's seat of pharmaceutical innovation.
